About

I am a historian, journalist, and editor based in Berlin, Germany. My work has appeared in The London Review of Books, The Guardian, Columbia Journalism Review, Financial Times, Times Literary Supplement, New Statesman, Tribune and Africa is a Country. I earned a Ph.D. in history from University College London in 2017, and from 2018 to 2020 I was a Marie Curie Fellow at the Free University in Berlin. I was longlisted for the Orwell Prize in 2019, was a fellow at the Camargo Foundation in 2023, and in 2024 I won a Work in Progress grant from the Silvers Foundation for my book on prisons. I was born in Manchester and I’ve been a Manchester City fan since before it was controversial.
